After completing his MBA in London, he returned to Mumbai and started ‘Swabhiman Sanghatana,’ an NGO that works to address various social issues such as basic health services, infrastructure, and unemployment. Meanwhile, he started supporting his father (a member of the Indian National Congress) in his political career. In 2008, one of the members of the Swabhiman Sanghatana named Viral Dholakia died in a police lathi charge while he was protesting in front of the headquarters of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. In 2010, Nitesh, along with other Congress activists, had an argument with Shiv Sainiks over flagging off a Konkan-bound train at Dadar railway station.
Later, the then State Congress president Manikrao Thakre did not like the growing influence of Swabhiman and asked Nitesh to stop the activities of the NGO. Thakre said that when they had Youth Congress then there was no need to run a parallel organization. After the incident, Nitesh left the city Youth Congress and asked for the position of Chief of State Youth Congress. As his father had a good influence in Congress, Nitesh maintained his position in Congress. Later, Swabhimaan Sanghatana (Nitesh’s NGO) launched a toll-free water helpline number in 2010 for the residents of Mumbai. During an interview, while raising questions over the intention of the BJP-Shiv Sena government over the water issue in Maharashtra, Nitesh said,
They have been claiming that the civic body is disconnecting unauthorised water connections. Two of Sena’s party offices, in Chembur and Mahim, have unauthorised connections. Why haven’t they been disconnected?”
Swabhimaan Sanghatana entered the Guinness World Records in 2011 for providing jobs to 25,300 unemployed youths. In 2012, under the name of his NGO, Nitesh started a few training programs such as Sindhudurg Tour Guide and Naukri Express to provide employment to the local youths.

Our life has gone haywire and becomes miserable because of our daughter’s death and after that this blatant falsehood spread by Rane and others. Even after registration of offence, Union Minister Rane and his son have not stopped maligning our name. It seems we will not get justice till we are alive as their right to spread falsehood is more important than our fundamental right to life, right to privacy and live with dignity. We, therefore, request you to issue directions to the concerned authorities to take appropriate steps so that justice is done, otherwise we will be left with no other alternative but to end our lives.”
