FitzSimons started off his career as a rugby player in his first club with the Sydney University Football Club and later played for the Manly RUFC in Sydney back in the 1980s under the coaching of Alan Jones. As of 1985 – 1989, he played with the CA Brive back in France for four seasons as the club’s first foreign player.
He then started working as a news journalist and has penned for The Sydney Morning Herald as of 1988. He has also beenworking as a sports columnist for that publication as of 1987. He often features on the Australian Foxtel program The Back Page, formerly hosted by rugby league journalist Mike Gibson and now Tony Squires.
On the Saturday edition of The Sydney Morning Herald, he penns a column titled “The Fitz Files”. In 2006, he started co-hosting a breakfast radio program along with Mike Carlton on Sydney radio station 2UE. He then joined the 2UE breakfast show for the aim to boost the program’s dwindling ratings. Back in June 2011, he got named a Member of the Order of Australia for service to literature as a biographer, sports journalist, and commentator.
