Prasad Vasant Sutar was born on 28 March, and he hails from Kalyan, Maharashtra. He attended Sri Vani Vidyashala High School in Kalyan. His zodiac sign is Aries. Growing up, Sutar was fond of drawing and painting. After completing his schooling, he pursued a course in commerce at Nagpur University (now Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University), Nagpur. Later, he pursued a DTP Course to learn to design, starting with the Page maker. Soon, he started working with CMM Studios and learnt about VFX eventually.

Career

Film

In January 1997, he started working as a Digital Artist/Visual Effects Supervisor at CMM Studios. He ventured into Bollywood with the Aamir Khan starrer film Ghulam (1998) in which he was a part of its digital effects team. Initially, he worked as a CGI Animator, and later, he worked as a digital compositor and VFX supervisor before moving on to head a VFX department. Thereafter, he worked as a digital compositor for various Bollywood films like Mann (1999) Arjun Pandit (1999),  Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega… (2000),  and Awara Paagal Deewana (2002). He worked as a visual effects supervisor for numerous Bollywood films like Hera Pheri (2000), Jajantaram Mamantaram (2003), Dhoom (2004), Krrish (2006), Prince (2010), Delhi Belly (2011), and 2 States (2014). He was nominated for Zee Cine Award for Best Visual Effects for the film Alag (2006). After working with various studios like Maya Entertainment, EFX, PIXION, and Reliance MediaWorks throughout his career, he co-founded NY VFXWAALA partnering with VFX Supervisor Naveen Paul in collaboration with Ajay Devgn Films in 2015. At NY VFXWAALA, Prasad Sutar headed the visual effects department of several popular Bollywood films like Drishyam (2015), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015), Tamasha (2015), Bajirao Mastani (2015), Dilwala (2017), Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior (2021).

In 2016, he was nominated for FOI Online Award in the category of Best Special Effects for the film Dangal. Another prominent project of NY VFXWAALA includes the 2016 film Shivaay which won the 24 FPS Award, 23rd Star Screen Awards, Zine Cine Awards, and Indywood Excellence Award. Within a short span of three years, NY VFXWAALA won 14 awards for VFX including the 64th National Award for the film Shivaay (2016) and the prestigious Asian Film Award (AFA) for Bajirao Mastani, becoming the first Indian VFX house to have won the AFA.

NY VFXWAALA won the 24 FPS Award, Indywood Excellence Award, and Power Brands Bollywood Film Journalists Award for Padmaavat (2018).

Later, NY VFXWAALA forayed into Digital Intermediate as NY DI-WAALA. NY VFXWAALA offers an array of services for post-production, VFX, DI, Animation, Lidar Set Scanning, etc. NY VFXWAALA is also one of the few studios in India to use LIDAR technology. He was the visual effects creative head for the Indian supernatural crime thriller web series The Last Hour (2021).

Controversies

Slammed for Poor VFX of Adipurush

In October 2022, following the release of Adipurush’s trailer, Sutar received a lot of flak for the poor VFX of the film Adipurush. Meanwhile, the makers and cast of the epic mythological film were also sued for hurting the religious sentiments of the Hindus. After the backlash, the makers of the film released a statement on Twitter stating a delay in the film’s release. Film’s director, Om Raut wrote,

In order to give a complete visual experience to the viewers, we need to give more time to the teams working on the film. Adipurush will now release on June 16, 2023. We are committed to make a film that India is proud of. Your support, love and blessings is what keeps us going”

Six months later, a new teaser was dropped and once again, the internet was filled with memes and feedback from netizens. People compared pictures from the old teaser with the new one and concluded that there wasn’t much improvement.
