Rajiv Khandelwal hails from New Delhi. He did his schooling from Delhi Public School, New Delhi and went on to pursue Bachelor of Commerce from Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi. Thereafter, he pursued Post Graduate Diploma in Rural Management from the Institute of Rural Management, Anand (IRMA) in Gujarat (1985-1987). In May 2005, Rajiv Khandelwal and Krishnavtar Sharma co-founded Aajeevika Bureau, a non-profit, charitable trust registered in Udaipur in Rajasthan.

Career
In 2004, Rajiv Khandelwal was shocked when he saw 15-20 migrant workers living in small congested rooms, few of them were suffering from Tuberculosis and having no medical care facilities, food, or other essential things, in Rajkot, Gujarat. It was an eye-opener for him, and he was moved by the prevailing conditions of the migrant workers. In 2005, Rajiv Khandelwal became a co-founder and executive director Aajeevika Bureau, a non-profit, charitable trust registered in Udaipur, Rajasthan. It is a non-profit organization that provides legal aid, skilling, social security, and livelihood support to migrant workers in construction, manufacturing, and related sectors in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
Awards/Honours
- In 2005, he was elected as an Ashoka Fellow in recognition of innovative ideas to address problems of seasonal migrant workers.
- In 2010, he received Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award by Schwab Foundation.

- On 2 October 2020, Rajiv Khandelwal, along with the co-founder of Aajeevika Bureau, Krishnavtar Sharma, appeared on the show Kaun Banega Crorepati, hosted by the Bollywood celebrity Amitabh Bachchan. It is an Indian television game show in which contestants tackle a series of multiple-choice questions to win large cash prizes. Kaun Banega Crorepati invited Rajiv Khandelwal and Krishnavtar Sharma in its Karamveer Special episode, which features an organisation or an individual who has relentlessly worked towards the betterment of the society or humanity in one way or another.
