Rajkumar Ranjan Singh was born on Monday, 1 September 1952 (age 69 years; as of 2021) in Kongba Nandeibamleikai, Imphal East, Manipur, India. His zodiac sign is Virgo. He pursued an M.A. (Geography), B.T. and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Geography in 1982 from Gauhati University, Assam, India.

Career

Politics

In 1972, Rajkumar Ranjan Singh completed his post-graduation in Geography from Gauhati University. In 1973, he opted for the lectureship at Ideal Girls’ College in Imphal, Manipur. He taught in the college till 1984. In the same year, he was designated as an assistant professor at Manipur University in the Department of Earth Science. In 1985, Rajkumar Ranjan Singh was elected as the Deputy Registrar of the University. He worked as the Registrar of Manipur University from 2004 to 2008. Rajkumar Ranjan Singh provided his services as the director-in-charge of the UGC Academic Staff College and College Development Director of Manipur University until his superannuation in 2012. In 2013, Ranjan Singh joined the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) and entered into his political journey. In 2014, he contested in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls for the Inner Manipur seat with a BJP candidature and lost the elections; however, in 2019, he again tried his luck and won in the second Lok Sabha polls. On 13 September 2019, he was sworn as a member of the Standing Committee on Science & Technology, Environment & Forests. From 9 October 2019 onwards, he was elected as a member of the Rules Committee and Member of the Consultative Committee and also handled the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region. In June 2021, he was given charge of state education and foreign affairs under the shuffle of the second ministry of Modi.

Literary Works

In addition to his political journey, Rajkumar Ranjan Singh has contributed to various literary, artistic and scientific fields. More than 100 articles and 25 research papers were written by Rajkumar Ranjan. The papers he has published include the topics related to the environmental, water and land issues in Manipur. Nationally, he emphasised the articles related to the border issues of Indo-Myanmar; whereas, internationally, he contributed to publishing the articles concerning the issues of transboundary rivers and lakes.

Social and Cultural Activities

Rajkumar Ranjan Singh is diligently involved in the activities related to the cultural and emotional cultural integration of Manipur’s ethnic communities who are residing both in hills and plains. He is also a part of the Manipur Cultural Integration Conference (MCIC). He served as the editor of the “Regional Integration” Bilingual Quarterly Journals. He was the former chairman of the Forward Artist Camp (FACE) of Manipur. Rajkumar Ranjan Singh frequently campaigns for the conservation of the cultural and natural heritage of Manipur along with the protection of the hills, mountains and rivers, wetlands and the various species of fauna and flora.

  • In the town of Imphal, on 15 June 2023, a group of people attacked and damaged Ranjan Singh’s house. Luckily, his family members were safe as they were not present at the time. These incidents took place in the midst of ongoing protests in Manipur since May 2023. The protests began after clashes erupted during a rally organized by the All Tribals Students Union (ATSU). The purpose of the rally was to express opposition to the proposal of including the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe category.
