Career

In 2001, Reena Gupta began working as an NRM associate at Oxfam America in Boston, Massachusetts until 2003. She then went on to work as a natural resource management specialist at the World Bank in New Delhi from 2003 to 2011 and as a freelance consultant from 2011 to 2020, where she focused on issues related to the environment and sustainable development.

Reena Gupta is known for her work in the Safe Food Movement and has written extensively on the harmful effects of pesticides in India. She regularly contributes to Indian newspapers such as Hindustan Times, The Times of India, and The Indian Express covering topics such as air pollution, environmental issues, and social justice. In 2011, Reena Gupta left the World Bank to become an activist for the Indian anti-corruption movement in Delhi. In December 2017, Gupta supported Delhi in signing onto the Urban 20 (U20) initiative. In 2020, Gupta joined the Aam Aadmi Party and worked as an advisor to the Environment Minister of Delhi, where she played a key role in creating a decision support system that identifies major pollution sources.

In 2020, Reena Gupta launched the ‘Yudh Pradhushan Ke Virudh’ campaign to fight Delhi’s air pollution.

One of her major accomplishments was making laws for companies like Uber and Ola Cabs, requiring them to switch to electric vehicles and meet yearly targets; she also encouraged neighbouring states and the federal government to do the same to promote electric car use. In 2021, she created the Green Delhi App and Green War Room, which allows residents to report localized pollution.

In 2022, Reena Gupta led the ‘Greening Delhi’ initiative, which is converting vacant spaces in Delhi into community parks and forests and modernizing existing neighbourhood parks with world-class facilities.

Controversies

Allegations Against BJP Spokesperson

In September of 2023, a complaint was made by Reena Gupta against Gaurav Bhatia, a spokesperson for India’s Bharatiya Janata Party, alleging that he had made unpleasant remarks about her on national television. Gupta claimed that she had been denied the opportunity to file a complaint against Bhatia at her local police station.
