Rick Henry Career
Rick began his broadcast career as Sports Director at WPDE-TV in Florence , South Carolina , in 1981 . He was the first African-American to hold the position of Sports Director at a television station in South Carolina .
He conducted play-by-play for an ABC telecast of a college football game between South Carolina State and Grambling while working for WPDE .
His first radio employment was with WHSC in Hartsville , South Carolina . He conducted play-by-play for High School basketball and baseball games in addition to his duties as a disc jockey .
Rick was appointed CETA Director for Chesterfield County, South Carolina, in 1980. The Comprehensive Employment Training Act (CETA) was a program that aimed to train employees and place them in public-sector positions. The program provided low-wage workers and the long-term unemployed with work , as well as summer opportunities for low-wage high school students .
Rick is involved in the community as well . Both Boys and Girls Clubs of the Midlands and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Florence named him Man of the Year . He is a member of the Ray Tanner Foundation’s Board of Directors , which was formed by USC baseball coach Ray Tanner and his wife Karen to benefit underprivileged youngsters . He was a member of the Gamecock Basketball Committee for the 100th Anniversary . He assisted in the planning of a celebration commemorating past USC basketball players and coaches and acted as the Master of Ceremonies for the event .
