Controversy
Apprehended by Enforcement Directorate
In June 2023, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) apprehended Sachin Sawant, charging him with corruption and acquisition of assets disproportionate to his income. Reports suggest that while serving as the deputy director of the ED’s Mumbai Zone 2 unit, Sawant probed a diamond trading company for allegedly illegally channelling and transferring over Rs. 500 crores; however, one of the individuals arrested in connection to the case filed a complaint against Sawant, accusing him of demanding a bribe. Upon further investigation, CBI officials discovered that Sawant had accumulated substantial assets in his name and the names of his immediate family members – his wife, father, and mother – during his tenure as deputy director. These assets, reportedly worth Rs. 2.45 crore, were deemed disproportionate to their legitimate income sources. The investigators also suspected Sawant of owning a BMW car and another vehicle through straw owners or benamidars. The ED later joined the investigation to trace the suspected money trail. Following Sawant’s arrest, he was transported from Lucknow to Mumbai, and the ED conducted searches at his residences in both cities. The properties of his relatives were also subject to ED searches.
