Father Killed in a Terrorist Attack
During the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in 1990 in India, Shraddha’s father, Makhan Lal Bindroo, and his family decided to stay back in Kashmir and serve the state. He owned a pharmacy in Indira Nagar, Srinagar. He was one of the most popular pharmacists in the town. On 5 October 2021, Makhan Lal Bindroo, along with two other civilians, was killed by the terrorists in Srinagar. While Makhan Lal was at his pharmacy, the terrorists shot him dead.
Although he was rushed to the SMHS Hospital, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, he had already died before reaching the hospital. The two other civilians who were killed in the attack were Mohd Shafi Lone in the Shahgund area of Bandipora, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, and Virender Paswan (a street hawker) near Madina Chowk, Lalbazar in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. According to the local police officials,
Makhan Lal Bindroo received four bullets and was declared brought dead at SMHS hospital. A famous chemist in the area, Bindroo had been operating his pharmacy in Srinagar for many decades and was also well known for his philanthropic works.
On his demise, various politicians shared their grief. Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party president, Mehbooba Mufti, said,
With the recent spate of civilian killings in Kashmir GOIs fake narrative of normalcy lies in tatters. An utterly desensitised govt that has devalued human lives & pushed J&K into further peril & chaos by its ruthless policies of collective punishment all in the garb of security.”
The Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha said,
I strongly condemn this cowardly act. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family. Perpetrators of this heinous act will be brought to justice very soon.”
While talking to the reporters, Makhan Lal’s son said,
Condolences are coming from people from all walks of life. Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, everybody is here and had it not been for Covid, lakhs of people would have come. He was a man loved by all and had no rivalry with anybody.”
Later, Junaid Azim Mattu, Mayor of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), said that a road in Srinagar would be named after Makhan Lal Bindroo. He further said,
The road from Haft Chinar Chowk to Jehangir Chowk (where Bindroo Medicare is located) will be named Shaheed Makhan Lal Bindroo Road as a tribute to his contributions to the society.”
Shraddha’s Comments made her a Hero
After the demise of Shraddha’s father, she was interviewed by the reporters. Her brave comments made her hero, and as soon as the video went viral on social media, she received huge appreciation from the netizens. When the reporters asked her about her father’s demise, she said,
My father was a fighter, always said ‘I’ll die with my shoes on. You can kill one person, but you can’t kill the spirit of Makhan Lal. Whoever shot dead my father, come in front of me. My father gave me education, while politicians gave you guns and stones. You want to fight with guns and stones? That is cowardice. All politicians are using you, come and fight with education.”
While pointing the attackers, she said,
Mister, who shot my father dead while he was working, if you have the guts and courage, come and have a face-to-face debate with us. Then we will see what you are. You won’t be able to utter a word. All you can do is throw stones and shoot bullets from behind.”
She further said,
My father was an awesome person who served Kashmir and Kashmiriyat. His body is gone but his spirit is still alive. Person responsible for the crime has opened doors of hell for himself.”
While talking about her family, Shraddha said,
I am an associate professor. I started from zero; my father started from a bicycle, my brother is a famous diabetologist, my mother sits in the shop — that is what Makhan Lal Bindroo made us. A Kashmiri Pandit, he will never die. Despite being a Hindu, I have read the Quran. The Quran says you may kill the body, the spirit lives on. Bindroo will remain alive in spirit.”
