Career
Early Career
Sowmya worked with the Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts (ACMA) as a performer and senior facilitator for almost three years. Some of her major performances were a modern dance called Transavatar, a journey through multiple identities, showcased in Sanchari in Bangalore, Karnataka (2006) and German dance festival in Germany (2007) and a contemporary dance production called Purushartha which was showcased in Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse in Yokohama, Japan (2007), Music Academy in Chennai, Tamil Nadu (2008), and Rang Shankara in Bangalore, Karnataka (2008). She worked with the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA), Yours Truly Theatre, and We Move Theatre.
In 2006, she participated as a dancer in the pilot batch of the Dance Intense workshop organised by Sampad International in Birmingham. Sowmya was part of the Movement and Theatre-based workshop, which was a collaboration of Indian and Malaysian dancers at the Outreach School to promote art education in Asia. She was the facilitator for various workshops conducted by NGOs such as the Sadhana Spastic Society in Mumbai and Ritanjali Second Chance School in Delhi. She has performed in events such as the International Photography Festival in China (2007), and Nagarantharan of ACMA at the Trafalgar Square Festival in London (2007). She conducted regular classes and workshops in schools like Parikrma Centre for Learning, Golden Bead Montessori, and Outreach School in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
Dancer
Sowmya had extensive training in various dance forms and techniques from ACMA. She was trained under Jayachandran Palazhy (artistic director of ACMA) in contemporary techniques, Guru Dil Sagar in Kalaripayattu, Minal Prabhu in Bharatanatyam, Christine Jaroszewski in Ballet, and Chris Lechner in Contact Improvisation. In addition to ACMA, she has performed for corporate events with Nritarutya Dance Studio, Raadha Kalpa Dance Company, Samanvay Dance Company, and Bangalore Dance Collective.
She has collaborated with artists like Michel Casanovas, Veena Basavarajaiah, Liadain Speranza Herriott, and Abhilash Ningappa for various projects. She conducts workshops in remote villages in collaboration with the Kishkinda Trust and for HIV-positive children with Sneha Care Home.
She has performed in several events and festivals such as Prayog at Bangalore International Festival (2009), Dharwad Utsav (2009), 3 Knots – a solo Bharatanatyam performance (2009), International Music Festival in Morocco (2010), Rvaadha Festival, and Alva’s Nudisiri Festival at Moodbidri (2011). She performed modern dance productions, such as New Trash and Disposable Heroes at Bangalore Dance Collective. She gave a solo Bharatanatyam performance for the National Level South Indian Dance Festival organised by the Kalpashree Performing Arts Center in 2012. and at the KANASU festival (2021).
As of 2024, Sowmya continues her training in the classical dance form, Bharatanatyam, under her guru, Ms Rama Vaidyanathan. She conducts dance workshops and performs in dance shows and art festivals.
Actor
Sowmya acted in the film Pancharangi (2010) as the girlfriend of the character Lucky or Lakshman Rao.
After almost a decade, she appeared as the character Vimala in the Kannada thriller film, Bhinna (2019).
She also acted in the romantic action comedy Kannada film, Aadi Lakshmana Purana (2019). She appeared as a child’s mother in the Tamil film Kuthirai Vaal (2021), a psychological thriller.

- Sowmya Jaganmurthy gave a dance performance named Fearless, a devised contemporary dance performance choreographed by Avril Stormy Unger, in the eighth month of her pregnancy in 2013.
