Suresh Selvarajan is an Indian production designer and art director known for his work in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi films. He is known for his work with film director Koratala Siva in the films ‘Bharath Ane Nenu’ (2018) and ‘Acharya’ (2022). Suresh Selvarajan is also recognized for his production design in films such as Om Shanti Om (2007), Enthiran (2010), and Ra.One (2011).

Suresh Selvarajan was born on Thursday, 13 October 1982 (age 41 years; as of 2023) in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, India. His zodiac sign is Libra. In 1999, he completed his schooling at Ramaswamy Chettiar Town High School in Tamil Nadu. In 2003, he obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting) degree at Bharathiyaar Palkalai Koodam College, Pondicherry University. His expertise lies in theatrical sets, miniatures, special props, and specialized costumes. At the age of nineteen, Suresh Selvarajan earned a state award for painting. According to him, his love for watercolours since childhood reflects his deep appreciation for nature’s beauty.

Career

Production Designer/Art Director

Suresh Selvarajan began his career as an assistant to production designer Sabu Cyril, working on significant projects like the popular film ‘Enthiran (2010),’ starring Rajinikanth. This marked the start of a nearly ten-year collaboration on 14 films with Sabu Cyril.

After that, Suresh Selvarajan entered the media industry and began working as a production designer and art director for television commercials. Some of the brands he worked with include Coca-Cola, ICICI Life Insurance, Servo Indian Oil, Audi A6, Kalyan Jewelers, Lloyd TV, Lux, Britannia, and Suzuki.

Suresh Selvarajan then took on the role of an assistant art director in films like ‘Agneepath’ (2012), ‘Ra One’ (2011), ‘Aladin’ (2009), and ‘Om Shanti Om’ (2007).

In 2013, Suresh Selvarajan worked as an art director for the film ‘Krrish 3’ and the Tamil film ‘Yaan’ in 2014. During this time, he also contributed to short films like ‘Shaadi Vaadi,’ a Hindi short film in 2014, and an English short film titled ‘Water is Life’ in the same year. In 2015, he worked as a production designer for the Hindi film ‘Brothers’ and the Tamil film ‘Radiopetti.’ Suresh Selvarajan continued his journey as a production designer for various films including ‘Iru Mugan’ (Tamil; 2016), ‘Bharath Ane Nenu’ (Telugu; 2018), ‘Petta’ (Tamil; 2019), and ‘Acharya’ (Telugu; 2022).

Suresh Selvarajan teamed up with director ‘Koratala Siva’ in 2017 for the film ‘Bharat Ane Nenu,’ which was released the following year. It was their first collaboration, and Suresh built a replica of the State Legislative Assembly in a studio in Hyderabad for the movie. He created a temple set worth Rs. 4 crore for the “Vachaadayyo Saami” song, which was only featured once in the film. Suresh’s work on ‘Bharat Ane Nenu’ impressed Koratala Siva, who then chose him as the production designer for the film ‘Acharya’ (2022). After its release, he received a compliment from an unknown common man. He mentioned this compliment during a media discussion on one occasion. Suresh Selvarajan said,

Generally, technicians are appreciated by directors and other insiders, common people hardly speak about the work of technicians. I received a call from an average movie-goer, and I’m grateful that Acharya took my name and work to common people.”

In Acharya, Suresh Selvarajan created the made-up town of Dharmasthali, believed to be the biggest set ever made in India. It took up 20 acres of land and had a temple, a tribal area, and a riverbed. People liked Suresh’s work on the movie, and his work was praised by the producer Ram Charan, movie critics, and the audience. It took him four months to plan and another three months to build the set. Later, the town was offered free to Salman Khan‘s 2023 film ‘Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan.’ In December 2023, Suresh Selvarajan worked on Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor. He made a machine gun weighing 500 kg for the film entirely from real steel. Suresh mentioned during a promotion of the film that it was not created using computer graphics (CGI).

Besides his film work, Suresh often serves as a guest lecturer at FTII, Pune.

Facts/Trivia

  • He follows a non-vegetarian diet.
  • On 27th February 2023, a major fire broke out on the Acharya film set near Kokapet Lake in Hyderabad. The grand temple structure of Dharmasthali caught fire, and footage of the incident went viral. According to reports, someone on the set was smoking and carelessly discarded the cigarette butt, resulting in a fire.
