Svetlana Generalova ex-husband, Masha Gessen tested positive for the BRCA mutation that is correlated with breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy in 2005. He came out as nonbinary in 2020 and began using they/them pronouns at that time. When speaking of their childhood, Gessen said,
