Allen was born in Columbus, Ohio, the United States to his parents Lowell, his father, and Donna his mother. His family later relocated to Carmel, Indiana, where he was raised. His father passed away on 17th, May, 2008, after a short illness. By the time of his father’s passing, his father and mother were already divorced. Ted’s mother is now married to Art Adams.The Chopped host has a sister named Lisa Martin.

Allen went to Carmel High School and graduated in 1983. He then joined Purdue University where he graduated with Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. He later pursued an MBA at Purdue’s Krannert Graduate School Management but left midway to in order to become a copy editor of the Lafayette daily newspaper Journal & Courier.
Later, attended New York University to earn a master’s degree in journalism and a certificate in the school’s Science and Environmental Reporting Program.
