Tristan Stubbs is a South African cricketer who plays as a wicketkeeper for the Proteas (South Africa national cricket team). He made his international debut for South Africa in June 2022 in a T20I match against India.

Tristan Stubbs was born on Monday, 14 August 2000 (age 22 years; as of 2022), and he hails from Knysna, South Africa. Earlier, the Stubbs family lived in Honeydew, Johannesburg. His zodiac sign is Leo.

He grew up in Johannesburg watching his father play hockey, which embedded a love for sports in him. Athletic since childhood, he would play hockey in the winter, cricket in the summer and golf whenever there was a major golfing event on television. He trained under coach Robin Abbott at the Knysna Sports School, now called the Knysna Sports Academy. After attending Knysna Primary School in Knysna, he enrolled in Grey High School in Port Elizabeth, where he was the captain of the school’s cricket team. At the age of 9, he was selected for the South Western Districts U-13 team. He once scored his first 50 for South Western Districts at Grey High.

Later, he started living in Gqeberha, South Africa.

Domestic

He was a part of the Eastern Province (EP) U19 team for Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week in 2017 and 2018. He was the captain of the EP U19 team for the 2018 Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week in Cape Town and led them to a 22-run win, contributing 105 runs in partnership with Luke Beaufort.

Previously, Stubbs had captained Port Elizabeth’s Grey High School cricket team. He has played for the SA Schools XI team and the SA A side. Stubbs made his first-class debut for Eastern Province on 16 January 2020 during the 2019–20 CSA 3-Day Provincial Cup. On 16 February 2020, he made his List A debut for Eastern Province in the 2019–20 CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge. He was a standout performer in the domestic T20 Challenge. On 21 February 2021, he made his T20 debut during the 2020–21 CSA T20 Challenge in which he played for the Warriors, a division 1 cricket team representing the Eastern Cape in South African domestic competitions. During the tournament, Stubbs scored 102 runs, averaging 34 with a strike rate of 127.5, an impressive performance for a debutant.

He was named to Eastern Province’s squad ahead of the 2021–22 cricket season in South Africa. He was a part of the winning squad of Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the 2022–23 SA20.

International

In May 2022, Stubbs was named to the South African T20I squad for its series against India, his maiden international call-up. On 9 June 2022, Tristan Stubbs made his T20I debut against India at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi; South Africa won the match by 7 wickets. On 18 March 2023, he made his ODI debut against West Indies at Buffalo Park, East London. He was a part of the South African squad that won the Vitality IT20 Series against England in 2022.

During the third and final T20I between England and South Africa at Southampton, Stubbs dived and grabbed a catch one-handed to dismiss England’s Moeen Ali, which was dubbed as “One of the best catches you’ll ever see” by England Cricket on Twitter.

Indian Premier League (IPL)

In May 2022, the franchise team Mumbai Indians bought Stubbs for INR 20 Lakh for the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL), replacing Tymal Mills, who was ruled out due to an injury. He made only two runs in his two innings for Mumbai after signing as a replacement.

He was again bought by the franchise Mumbai Indians for IPL 2023. On 19 December 2023, he was acquired by Delhi Capitals in the 2024 IPL auction for Rs. 50 lakh; the auction was held at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai.

Lanka Premier League (LPL)

In July 2022, he was signed by the franchise team Jaffna Kings for the 2022 Lanka Premier League.

The Hundred

In the 2022 season of The Hundred, he played for the Manchester Originals team that emerged as the runner-up after Trent Rockets won by 2 wickets.

  • Tristan suffered from Sever’s disease as a youngster, just like his father. The condition causes swelling and irritation of the growth plate in the heel. Tristan’s father, Chris, had to have surgery for the disease when he was in Grade 11. However, doctors advised Chris and Mandy that if Tristan stayed away from sports for a while, his condition would be cured without any need for surgery. Therefore, Tristan stayed away from sports for almost a year.
