Controversies

Alleged for kidnapping

In 2014, the Madras High Court asked for a response to a request from a businessman who wanted his 28-year-old wife and 5-year-old daughter, who he said were kidnapped, to be brought back and freed. In his request, Velivela Rakesh from Kodambakkam claimed that his wife Sowmya and daughter Naisha were taken by Vetri Duraisamy from CIT Nagar, who had political power. After hearing the request, Justices S Tamilvanan and T Mathivanan of a Division Bench told the relevant officials to reply by 22 December 2014. Rakesh said that Sowmya had become friends with Duraisamy, who then kidnapped both her and their daughter.

Raid against Vetri

In 2016, the income tax officials started searching the places of Natham R Viswanathan, who was the former AIADMK minister, and Vetri. They are looking into claims that they did not pay some taxes and were checking their involvement in taking money from a businessman before the Tamil Nadu Assembly election on 16 May 2016. According to some sources, the raids started because officials found some proof at businessman Anbunathan’s place. This proof suggested he had connections with Natham Viswanathan and Vetri Duraisamy. Officials searched three places owned by Vetri Duraisamy, including a farmhouse. In different searches, they also checked many locations of a big jewellery store chain all over the country and a well-known hospital to see if they were avoiding paying taxes.

Facts/Trivia

According to the police, the person who was saved and the car driver who passed away in the accident didn’t have any injuries to their heads, which made them think the missing man, Vetri, might have died.
  • The police also said they’ve asked for navy divers to help look for Vetri in the river, and they are trying hard to find him. Even after searching for three days with teams from NDRF, police, and home guards, they did not find him, but they planned to keep looking.
  • Saidai Duraisamy, who is Vetri’s father, offered Rs. 1 crore to anyone who can find his son. He also asked local people and officials to help spread the word. He hoped someone from the nearby tribal areas might know something.
