Vijay Sharma is an Indian politician who is known for being elected as the Deputy Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, serving alongside Arun Sao in the Ministry of Vishnu Deo Sai. He represents the BJP in the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly, representing the Kawardha Assembly constituency.

Career
Vijay began his political career in college. In 1989, he took charge of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the student union affiliated with RSS. Simultaneously, he worked as the coordinator for the Kawardha Nagar unit. In 1992, he attended the All India Student Council in Raipur. In 1993, he remained active in the student organization. He formed a local student organization- Chhatra Sangharsh Morcha.
He held a position as an operator at Page Me pager company from 1996 to 1997. From 1998 to 2001, he was employed in the operator department at Reliance Telecom Limited in the Raipur centre. In 2004, he served as the District President for Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha in Kabirdham District. He is currently the General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Chhattisgarh and has previously held the position of President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha in Chhattisgarh. His political impact increased, and in 2011, he took on the position of District General Secretary. He was a member of the District Panchayat for two terms. In 2016, he was appointed as the State President of Yuva Morcha in Chhattisgarh.
Politics
In 2018, Vijay contested the assembly elections against Congress minister Mohammad Akbar. However, Akbar won the seat with a significant lead of over 59,000 votes, the widest margin in that election. In 2020, Sharma started his political career as a member of the Zilla Panchayat in Kabirdham. Before that, his wife held the same position. In the 2023 assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) selected him to run for the Kabirdham assembly seat. He won by 39,592 votes, surpassing the previous MLA and Congress minister Mohammad Akbar. Already under consideration for the role of Deputy CM, he was sworn in as the Second Deputy Chief Minister on 13 December 2023, during the Chief Minister’s inauguration ceremony.
Controversies
In October 2021, there were clashes in Kawardha over a religious flag, and individuals, including former chief minister Raman Singh’s son Abhishek Singh and Rajanandgaon MP Santosh Pandey, were accused. Over 80 people faced charges. Sharma was arrested for supposedly provoking violence but was later released on bail. According to a senior district police officer, out of the 82 accused, 73 have been apprehended.

The biggest issue is the politics of Akbar due to which people are living in fear and terror. They (Congress) have misused the law though he is law minister. People have called me and said they will support me. The biggest public issue of Kawardha is its fight for self-respect and a war of liberation to end terror. It never saw curfew, use of tear gas. So many people went to jail while many others were lathi charged.”
